TIP! Do not give an infant or toddler soda, diet or regular. Your young child should drink milk, juice or water to get the vitamins and nutrients he or she needs.

Expecting parents shouldn’t spend lots of money on nursery equipment. Cribs, blankets, changing tables, and items of this matter, can be purchased for a whole lot cheaper at department stores, like Walmart, while also providing high quality. Also, consider borrowing some nursery products from friends or family members.

TIP! Children of all ages who walk to school should be wearing retro-reflective materials on either their clothing or backpack. You can also purchase reflective fabric strips that you can attach with Velcro to other garments.

Lay your child on the counter in the kitchen and lay a rolled towel under his neck; use the faucet water and put it on his hair and scalp. This technique is beneficial for toddlers who are afraid to dunk their head or be doused with water.

Although it is important to spend time with your kids, it is also important to take time for yourself. This helps you be yourself and a great parent too.

TIP! Extracurricular activities can offer your child many benefits and advantages. These activities provide a valuable opportunity for your child to develop important social skills such as how to make new friends.

Children in the preschool years do not handle transitions well. It can be stressful to make an abrupt switch from one activity to another, and your child’s behavior may suffer.

TIP! Your child’s self-esteem can be bolstered by participating in team sports. Strengthen the bond with your child by attending their games and ceremonies.

Make sure never to get a toddler or child soda of any kind. Concentrate on offering your child beverages that include vitamins and other nutrients, such as water, sugar-free juices and milk.

TIP! To foster better eating habits, make your house a junk food free zone. If candy, chips and cookies are not readily available, your child will probably not ask for them as often.

TIP! If your child has ADHD or a similar condition, it is important that you keep him or her busy. Energetic children such as these will look for things to do and perhaps act out.

It is a well known fact that each child in a family will be different. Just because one parenting style is effective with a child does not mean it will be as effective with another. This applies to both punishments and rewards. Keeping all of this in mind, still use the same techniques you have had success with in the past.

TIP! There is very little use for anger in good parenting. Parents should never succumb to anger when discipling children.

TIP! Children need a good knowledge of the rules they need to follow. Always inform the children of the consequences if they choose to break those rules.

Do not expect to bond instantly with your stepchild. Many kids whose parents are separated experience serious resentment. By going slowly and not trying to accelerate a bond, you and your stepchild will gradually learn to coexist and perhaps even become buddies.

TIP! When potty training a young child, be sure get him to try regularly, every hour or so. Toddlers typically do not notice that they have to use the restroom until the last minute.

Are you a parent of a child you have adopted? If so, you should be ready to answer certain questions when your kid reaches an age where he or she knows they have been adopted. Many children that are adopted become curious about their birth family. When they have questions about this, they will expect you to provide them with some answers. Do not lie to them about their biological family, it will only make them hold resentment toward you if they find out the truth.

TIP! Do not give your child everything he wants. Of course you can give them things now and then, but it should always be on your terms.

Being A Parent in modern times is often challenging, but now you are in a much better position to parent well. Use these tips to help you nurture and cherish the precious gift that is your child. Bringing Up A Child is a great opportunity and you should do your best to enjoy it.

Baby Love

Until I became a mother nine months ago, 3 am was sleep time. I didn’t hear cars driving by or see the flicker of light peak in through my curtain. Manhattan was still bustling, emergency service personnel changed tours, but I was sleeping and content. When I gave birth to my daughter everything changed. As a newborn she woke up every 3 hours for her feedings without fail. I was given a 10 second warning to either fix her formula or breastfeed before the wailing began. At around 7 months old she started sleeping thought the night; a sigh of relief. But, a few weeks ago the nighttime wakings began again; my daughter begins whimpering, and only gets louder from there. She’s matured and is somewhat considerate, so she doesn’t belt out as loud as she use to. The problem isn’t that she wakes myself or my husband up, but that we only hear her after she’s reached full despair. I chalk it up to separation anxiety; because she’s become a bit more attached during the day. After changing her diaper and feeding her, she coos, speaks gibberish, puts her two middle fingers in her mouth and goes off into a slumber.

Then I began thinking; as a parent shouldn’t I respond to her when I hear the early part of her protesting and not the latter? Isn’t that what parenting is all about? The tragic stories involving children and teenagers are in headlines almost everyday. In essence; our children still give us clues when they feel distressed. As they become older there intelligence increases and there better equipped to hide their feelings.  I guess as a parent it’s my responsibility to detect the early cries before they peak. Learning about our children, being involved in there lives and making a real effort to be a part of their lives- is key. As she grows, I know the whimpering will turn into “Mom I can’t sleep” and eventually to “ Mom leave me alone I’m fine”.  The distress calls change and as a parent, it’s up to me to recognize them and comfort her.

Safe Trick or Treating

Jack-o-lanterns, parties and candy galore:  That’s exactly why kids love Halloween.  Since it’s the one night of the year when a high volume of children hit the street, it’s important to troll for treats safely.

  • Kept those swords, knives and pitchforks short and soft.
  • Face paint is a better option, but if your child insists on wearing a mask choose one with wide enough eyeholes to see through.
  • Hem costumes  with packing tape to prevent dragging and tripping.
  • If your child is wearing a dark costume-add reflective tap on the back, arms and legs so he’s visible to drivers.
  • Go through the bag before your child does and inspect all treats.  Throw out anything unwrapped, homemade treats and candy corn.
  • Avoid plastic costumes shoes and opt for flats or sneakers.
  • Children should always trick or treat accompanied by an adult and teenagers should stay in large groups.

How To Shop Smart

I love shopping!  having a credit card makes the transaction a whole lot easier. but once you walk out the store and get home to try every thing on your completely back to you senses what was I thinking . Following these simple tips will help you to avoid making a trip to return and also gas money.

  • Have a list-  We all love window shopping, but if your goal is to purchase a particular item, then stick to the plan and don’t get sidetracked by items you probably won’t need
  • Be Sure about it – Try it on and ask yourself ” Do I need this” “Does this look good on me” or “Will I be able to wear it next year”. If it’s a emphatic yes then pass up on the item.
  • Dress For Action- Wear clothes that are easy to get into and out of and shoes that are practical
  • Stick with Classics- Don’t feel guilty about spending a few bucks more for a classic pieces such as a wool slacks, pumps or a black leather handbag.  These are items that have more mileage and will save you money in the long run.
  • (Amortize the cost)- Is this $1000 coat expensive or worth the purchase.  If it’s a classic cut or style it can last anywhere from 5-10 years.  That is the one piece that will stand out everytime you go out and if the craftsmanship or brand is impeccable it’s worth it.
  • Shop Sales- If you’ve just fallen in love with a beautiful black cocktail dress, what for a sale.
  • Mix and match- buy pieces that are interchangeable and work well with other pieces
  • Understand your style sense- Know one knows you better than yourself.  Does the piece flatter your body or is it age or office appropriate.
  • Go shopping when your alert- Avoid shopping when your sluggish because you’ll probably pick something out to get out of the store. Go out when your enthusiatic and engized.

Unspoiling My Baby

Am I spoiling my baby?

Naturally this question came up when my newborn refused to sleep and preferred to nurse every hour or so. I’d have to walk her for around the house for about

20-30 minutes before the crying would stop and she would gently fall asleep in my arms.  At first, it felt as if my little girl was running the show, but the truth

was she was miserable and had a difficult time adjusting outside the womb.  It was a pretty simple formula; pick baby up and the motion would sooth her

tension and put her to sleep.   I did what any loving and attentive mother would do when her baby cries.  I’m sure my daughter wasn’t trying to make us

miserable so that we were at her beck and call at all hours of the night.

By the time she was 6 months old I became a bit more suspicious about her demands. By then she was able to soothe herself to sleep and her feeding schedule

was somewhat regimented.  She still insisted on being held and walked around even after being cuddled and her playtime and basic needs were met.  My house

was left in disarray, I couldn’t sit down for a meal and the thought of pursuing an endeavor, such as this blog became impossible. I’d get around to doing my

chores and running my errands ONLY  if I carried her around in a Bjorn.

Things had to change.  In the long run I wasn’t doing her any favors by helping her maintain her demanding and excessively dependent ways.  I created a

schedule that enabled me to do tend to my matters while my baby was awake.  I created a schedule and after her morning feeding I would spend about 2 hours

doing the following: reading, toy activity, a bottle feeding, cuddling and then bed.  After her nap she was refreshed and already spent most of the morning with

me, so she didn’t feel neglected.  After taking her out of her crib, I usually sit down with her for another 5-10 minute to read, introduce a toy then kiss her on the

head and walk away. Her initial reaction is to fuss and whine for a few minutes, but now she’s fully absorbed in her activities.  After I’m done with some of my

daily chores and errands I’ll sit by her, write my blog ,read the papers or watch the news.  If she crawls up to me, I’ll hold her in her place and after some time

she naturally wants to move along and pursue her activities again.

Adding Coconut Oil to Food

If your a coconut aficionado like myself then you’ll be glad to know that coconut oil isn’t just great as a cake topping.  With it’s anti-aging, hydrating, sugar regulatory properties it’s safe to say that coconut isn’t just satisfying on the palette.   Here a few things you can use coconut oil for.

Oil- Use unrefined coconut oil as an alternative to olive oil when sauteing.  You can also make delicious chocolate chip cookies by substituting butter with a few scoops of coconut oil.

Milk- Stir into butternut squash, cream of asparagus and lentil soup for a more decadent dish.

Dried- Use the unsweetened (variety) as a alternative to bread crumbs. Coat shrimp, fish or chicken to achieve a more healthier breaded dish.

Water- Blend the water into orange, pineapple, mango juice or your favorite yogurt smoothies….yum yum!!

Fresh- Eat it fresh to curb sugar cravings and wipe out major halitosis.

9/11 – A Memory

On September 11, 2001 my day started out as any other day; I woke up and went through the regular morning routine, got on the F train to get to my temp job in lower Manhattan.  A little after 9am my brother Michael called to see if I was alright. My brother’s call seemed very unusual; I couldn’t understand why my younger brother was so concerned about my well being.  His voice was stern and ominous ” A plane struck the world trade center tower, leave the building now and get home.” Just when I was ready to ask him for more details my co-workers became restless and someone ran to a nearby radio and tuned to 1010 wins.  My brother called a little later to tell me the first tower had collapsed and the second one was up in flames with a similar outcome.  I didn’t believe him; he was probably mistaken. How can a massive structure such as the world trade towers disintegrate?  Shortly afterwards the confirmation came through on the radio.  I gathered my belongings and ran outside to a very different lower Manhattan. Heavy smoke traveled from a distance and the sound of sirens drowned out any speaking voice in my vicinity.  My ex-husband made several attempts to get through, but couldn’t because cell service was down and instead he used the walkie talkie feature on his Nextel.  He was in a meeting on the 63 floor of Rockefeller Center when a woman jumped from her seat screaming at the view displayed in front of her.  He instructed me to meet him at a half way point so we can cross the bridge together and get home. The subway system was down and the city was at a stand still.  As I walked through the streets, shop owners were offering refreshments and people were walking out of stores with bags in there hand.  I met my ex and we walked towards the Queens Borough bridge.  I drove across the same bridge on many occasions, but I never imagined fleeing across the Queensboro bridge to get home. The walking crowd was quiet and resolute and above us were fighter planes flying at supersonic speeds.  I didn’t know the degree of the situation until I finally got home. The following day Mayor Guiliani recommended that New Yorkers stay home for the day. We met up with a few friends for breakfast and you could feel the sense of shock and bewilderment in our surrounding.  We were grieve stricken for the victims and families and stunned that such a terror attack had taken place on our soil.

The days that followed were surreal and the missing posters that were taped to signposts, building walls and mailboxes still moves me to tears.   Those flyers stayed up around the city for weeks and became enmeshed with the sorrow and dread New Yorkers carried with them day after day.   I was spared along with so many other New Yorkers. We watched from afar, but grieved as a community, united on that day as a family.  I can’t imagine the heartbreak, hardship and misfortune endured by those who lost loved loves on 9/11. God bless the victims and families of 9/11 and may god bless the military men and women of the United States of America who continue to fight against this evil called terrorism.
